Why Does God Care What I Do With My Body?

You may know that you are a child of God and still wonder why He cares so much about what you do with your body. If a choice is personal, why should it matter spiritually? That is a fair question. Let’s look at what God has revealed about what your body actually is.

In Doctrine and Covenants 88, the Lord was teaching Joseph Smith about resurrection and eternal glory when He said, “The spirit and the body are the soul of man.” Your body is not just something your spirit uses for a few decades. Receiving a body is part of your eternal development as a child of heavenly parents, and through Jesus Christ it will one day be resurrected.

That helps explain why The Family: A Proclamation to the World connects our bodies with divine identity, marriage, and the sacred power to create life. President Russell M. Nelson called the body a “magnificent gift” from Heavenly Father and taught that it helps us fulfill “the full measure of our creation.” God’s boundaries around sexuality grow out of that purpose. He is teaching you to use a sacred gift in ways that prepare you for covenant love.

It is easy to absorb the idea that freedom means deciding for yourself what your body means and what its powers are for. Agency matters, but it works best when joined to truth. Satan can use a smaller view of the body to make God’s guidance feel intrusive rather than helping you recognize what He is protecting.

Research by Loren Marks, David Dollahite, and colleagues with 198 highly religious families found that faith shaped how people understood sexual boundaries, the purpose of sex, and the influence of culture and media. Research does not establish doctrine, but it shows how sexual choices can be shaped by a larger sense of purpose.

Ask yourself: Where have I learned what my body is for? How would I treat my body differently if I saw it as part of my eternal identity? What messages are shaping the way I think about sexual freedom?
