How Do I Know When a Prophet Is Really Speaking for God?

You may believe in living prophets and still feel unsure where their humanity ends and their calling begins. Prophets are imperfect. They have said things that were later corrected. It is fair to wonder how you are supposed to tell which words carry the Lord’s authority.

The pattern is simpler than the worry. Prophets do not need to be flawless for Jesus Christ to authorise and guide them. Their authority comes from Him, and their prophetic teaching comes by revelation. What you are looking for is not a perfect man but the Holy Ghost confirming a teaching to you.

Eternal Truths

The Lord defined the standard Himself, and it is about revelation rather than personality. Instructing early missionaries, He taught that what His servants speak “when moved upon by the Holy Ghost” is scripture and the will of the Lord (Doctrine and Covenants 68:2-4). Authority comes from Christ, and the teaching comes by the Spirit.

You have your own half of the pattern. Elder Robert D. Hales explained that prophets receive revelation to direct the Church while you are responsible to seek revelation for your own life. The Holy Ghost helps you receive and understand prophetic teaching. He does not replace the prophet’s responsibility to receive it for the Church.

Scripture never presents flawless messengers. Peter needed correction. Moses said he was slow of speech. Moroni wrote openly about his own weakness in writing. If God had required perfection in His servants, He would have had no servants.

What Can Make This Confusing?

It is easy to take the true statement “prophets are imperfect” and quietly turn it into “imperfect people cannot reliably speak for God”. Scripture does not support that step. The adversary can use an unrealistic expectation of perfection to make ordinary human weakness look like evidence that God is absent, and the standard being applied is one God has never set.

What Research Shows

Research on religious disagreement followed 174 people discussing difficult religious issues and found that greater mutual intellectual humility was associated with more trust and closeness afterwards. It cannot tell you whether a teaching is true. It does suggest that going into a hard question willing to learn changes what you come out with.

Questions to Think About

• Am I expecting prophets to meet a standard God has never required?
• Have I asked the Holy Ghost to help me understand this specific teaching?
• Am I studying the prophet’s actual message, or mostly reactions to it?
