Answer
Am I Still Sealed After Divorce?
If you were married in the temple and are now divorced, you may wonder, “Am I still sealed? Did the divorce undo what happened in the temple?” Those questions can carry more than doctrinal uncertainty. The sealing may represent promises you cherished, a marriage you fought to save, or a future you once expected to have.
A civil divorce ends the legal marriage, but it does not by itself cancel a temple sealing. A sealing cancellation is a separate matter, handled through priesthood channels. Even after divorce, you can keep the covenants you personally made with God and receive the blessings that come through your own faithfulness.
Eternal Truths
Jesus taught the eternal pattern and acknowledged the fallen world at the same time. In Matthew 19:3–8, the Pharisees questioned Him about divorce. He took them back to the Creation and taught that God intended husband and wife to become one. He also acknowledged that divorce had been permitted. Both things are true, and holding them together is what this question needs.
The promises attached to a sealing were made to you individually. The Family: A Proclamation to the World teaches that temple ordinances make eternal family relationships possible. President Dallin H. Oaks promised divorced members in “Divorce” that faithful disciples “will not be denied the blessings of eternal family relationships.”
What Can Make This Confusing?
Some marriages end after betrayal, abandonment, addiction, abuse, or years of serious difficulty. Others end with mistakes and sorrow on both sides. It is easy to read the end of a marriage as a verdict on your standing before God. It is not one. Questions about a former spouse, remarriage, children, or exactly how relationships will be arranged in eternity may need individual guidance from priesthood leaders, and some answers may not come soon. Uncertainty about the details is not evidence that God has withdrawn His promises.
What Research Shows
Research on adults going through divorce found that coping through religion was associated with greater personal growth afterward. That cannot tell you what happens to a sealing. It does suggest that faith is not merely a comfort here; for many people it becomes part of how rebuilding actually happens.
Questions to Think About
- Have I confused the end of my marriage with the end of God’s promises?
- Which of my questions genuinely need help from my bishop?
- What am I still grieving that deserves patience rather than an answer?
What You Can Do
Write down your specific sealing questions this week. Read President Oaks’s message, and take the questions that remain to your bishop rather than carrying them alone.
Jesus Christ understands both covenant promises and mortal heartbreak, and He can help you move forward without pretending that either is simple.
