Who Am I, and Why Am I Here?

Almost everyone asks this at some point, usually when something else in life has come loose. It is a real question and it has an answer that does not depend on how the rest of your life is going.

You are a son or daughter of Heavenly Parents, and you are here to receive a body, use your agency, make covenants, and become like Them through Jesus Christ. Both halves of that were settled before anything in your current life happened. Whatever you are measuring yourself by today — appearance, achievement, relationship status, a mistake, a struggle, what other people think — arrived long after the answer did.

Eternal Truths

Your identity began before this life, and not as a metaphor. You existed, with a personality and a will, and you accepted the plan that brought you here. The Family: A Proclamation to the World speaks of divine nature and destiny in the same breath, because what you are points at what you may become.

Moses learned it in the right order. In Moses 1, he saw God, was told he was a son of God, and only afterwards was confronted by Satan demanding worship. His answer — who art thou? For behold, I am a son of God — worked because he had been given the true thing first and had it to hand when the false one arrived. Learn who you are while nothing is wrong, so you still have it when something is.

You are here to become, which is slower than most people want. Not to locate one hidden assignment before your real life can start. The becoming is happening in the ordinary week you are currently in, including the parts that feel like nothing.

What Can Make This Confusing?

The failure mode worth naming is when temporary labels start feeling permanent. Single, unemployed, struggling, behind — all accurate descriptions of a moment, all disastrous as definitions. They describe where you are standing, and standing somewhere long enough makes it feel like a description of you.

Questions to Think About

• What am I currently using to measure myself, and where did it come from?
• Which of my labels describe a season rather than a person?
• When did I last hear the true thing about myself, and from whom?

What You Can Do

Say it deliberately this week, before you need it. Write the sentence down in your own words — who you are and what you are here for — and put it somewhere you will see it on a bad day. The essay behind this answer works through the doctrine and the research at length.

Jesus Christ knows exactly who you are, and He is the one making you into what you are becoming.
